This is the monologue I intend to read. It is from Marilyn Monroe's film Some Like It Hot.
Yeah, you better keep a look out. I’m not very bright I guess. No, just dumb, if I had any brains I wouldn’t be on this crummy train with this crummy girl’s band. I used to sing with male bands but I can’t afford it anymore, have you ever been with a male band? That’s what I’m running away from. I’ve been with six different ones in the last two years . Oh brother! … I’ll say…I can’t trust myself. I have this thing about saxophone players , especially tenor sax. I don’t know what it is but they just curdle me. All they have to do is play eight bars of “Come To Me, My Melancholy Baby” and my spine turns to custard. I get goose pimply all over and I come to them. Every time. … But you’re a girl thank goodness. That’s why I joined this band: Safety first. Anything to get away from those bums. You don’t know what they’re like! You fall for them. You really love them, you think, “This is going to be the biggest thing since the Graf Zeppelin.” The next thing you know, they’re borrowing money from you, they’re spending it on other dames and betting on horses. Then one morning, you wake up, the guy’s gone, the saxophone’s gone. All that’s left behind is a pair of old socks and a tube of toothpaste all squeezed out. So you pull yourself together, you go on to the next job, the next saxophone player. It’s the same thing all over again. See what I mean? Not very bright. I can tell you one thing, it’s not going to happen to me again. Ever. I’m tired of getting the fuzzy end of the lollipop.

Name.
Name by Rob Bell
Watching this in class...
Is it normal for you? *I like that.
Name was your identity. It made you, you.
What is your name=who are you?
How much pain comes from not knowing who we are?
"You follow me..." *Yeah, if Jesus said that to me I wouldn't argue, no sir.
Stop asking "what about him" or "what about her", focus on us.
"A heart at peace gives life to the body..." *that is beautiful. I like the idea of a tattoo of that.
"Resentment kills the fool..."
Don't have to be proud of our history, but we do have to claim it
What is it to you? You have your own path.
How can you learn to love other people when we cannot come to terms with ourselves?
There is nothing more important ...I am Emily.
I am more than okay with the life that God has given me.
We have to be saved from all the times we haven't been our true selves.
"May you find yourself comfortable in your own skin." -Rob Bell

**Own up to you. Do what makes you happy; do what makes you thrive. <3**

The Final Round Begins...Speeches #3
Okay...today is the day. I have to get up and talk about baseball. I hate my life. Here I go...
My stomach hurts today...sigh. I think this speech is giving me an ulcer. Perhaps I should have skipped today.
...
We have started talking about annotated bibliographies. Those are not my friend. I hate them, and do not want to do it. Good thing I am not a communications or English major...right?!
Think about these things when you are using sources for your bibliography:
Main Topic?
Main Resource?
Main Argument?
Credible?
Reliable?
How does it compare to sources in the field or in your bibliography?
Is there bias?

What is the Only Thing Worse Than a Zombie Apocalypse?...Public Speaking-Chapter 14 Notes.
Chapter 14: Public Speaking Topics, Audiences, and Research
In Public Speaking: a speaker presents a relatively continuous message to a relatively large audience in a unique context. Public speaking is transactional.
Benefits of Public Speaking:
-Improve your public speaking skills
-Improve your personal and social abilities
-Improve your academic and career skills
Manage Your Apprehension:
-Reduce the newness of public speaking by gaining experience
-Reduce your self-focus by visualizing public speaking as conversation
-Reduce your perceived differentness from the audience
-Reduce your fear of failure by thoroughly preparing and practicing
-Reduce your anxiety by moving about and breathing deeply
-Avoid chemicals as tension relievers
Step 1: Select your topic, purposes, and thesis
-A good topic is:
a. substantive
b. appropriate
c. culturally sensitive
Finding a topic:
-yourself
-brain-storming
-surveys
-news items
-topic lists
Step 2: Analyze your audience
-Cultural factors
-Age
-Gender
-Affectional orientation
-Religion
Step 3: Research your topic
-research for specifics
-research to discover what is known
-research to support a position
-Interview for information
-Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources
-Scholarly and popular journals
-Encyclopedias
-Almanacs
-Biographies
-Statistics
-News sources
-The government
-The web
Thinking about this all, it doesn't seem like something I should be so utterly terrified about, but I am. I am thinking about resorting to a muscle relaxer before my speech, just to calm myself down...

Notes City: In Class Business
Just got done playing the name game. Rob still doesn't know our names, so there's that. Apparently he has a niece named Emily, but it doesn't seem to be working...
I miss Alex today. :( I wish she wasn't so sickly and dying, but what do you do?!
There is a wholeeeeee bunch of jibberish written on the board, and I don't quite know where to start with it, so I may or may not write everything down. Apparently it is the rubric for our next speech? Yikes...
-How to prepare a speech.
-How to speak in public.
-How to communicate.
Tell them, tell them, and tell them again!
Include an audio/visual element. Use media!
Direct quotes need a source to go with them.
PASSION!
Do not end with "that's about it..."
What is cognative dissonance? I don't know why that is on the board, but it is fairly wonky and not very clear.
FEAR. Yeah this makes sense. I am TERRIFIED to get up in front of the class. The name game was stressful enough! As a pathologist, I want to mostly work as a coroner with dead people...they don't talk, and I like it that way.
There needs to be a definite beginning, middle, and end.
HEY! I think I get bonus points for knowing everybody's names! BINGO! :)
MATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!
RUBRIC:
-Wear something sassy. Nothing more, nothing less. <3
-50 XP
-Make up own rubric with information from the board
**Something about compassion?
**Look in Chapter 14 for guidelines
**Topic can basically be about anything. I think I might talk about my best friend Salann. Maybe include the story of how we came to be. It's kind of interesting? I have a lot of pictures.I COULD MAKE A SLIDESHOW! Cool.
Cognitive Dissonance: the anxiety that occurs when you are having opposing thoughts or attitudes. Ex: Hey, I really like you, but I don't like that you get "ripped" every single night. (Rob Quote)
Rob is now asking us loaded questions so I need to go...BYE.

Life 2.0: Is This Real Life?!...No, no it's not.
First of all, I will begin by saying I am keeping an open mind about this whole virtual world thing, but in certain circumstances, you just want to reach through the screen and shake these people. I am having a hard time with understanding how these people can live their lives through Second Life, and go along with everything in it. How are people putting their lives on hold or completely altering them in order to satisfy their virtual life?? You have no idea who is behind that avatar; it could be a person of a different gender, age, or a completely different from what they have said to be. I understand a fun, friendly relationship with these aliens of whom you do not know, but to end marriages, to set up meetings is highly naive and risky!
All I can think about is the Dateline program "How to Catch a Predator", with pedophiles seeking out young teenagers in chat rooms. The avatars may not be accurate, age is lied about, and those molesters have absolutely no idea that they are actually talking to undercover cops. This same concept is relevant in Second Life, you have no way of knowing who is behind that avatar, and it can be a rude awakening if you meet that person and they are not who you thought they were.
From my perspective, Second Life deems itself more of a danger than a positive thing. Overall, it creeps me out, and that's that.
